Autonomous vehicles
Autonomous vehicles division of the Applied Research Center aims to enable the lawful development and EU-wide certification of self-driving vehicles in Estonia, in cooperation with the Transport Administration, while contributing to increased traffic safety.
Metrosert’s ADS laboratory aims to develop into a recognized technical service of the Type Approval Authority.
The broader goal of the division is to support Estonia’s development as a testing and development center for autonomous vehicles, including developing a legally clear environment and maximizing the value of existing physical testing infrastructure through a planned unique mobile field laboratory.
The planned capabilities of the division prospectively encompass all necessary competencies for EU-type approval of an autonomous vehicle’s Automated Driving System (ADS) based on Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/1426. The Applied Research Center’s working model supports cooperation with universities and other research institutions, ensuring access to diverse scientific infrastructure and competence.
