Senior Scientist of Drone Technologies

AS Metrosert is the National Metrology Institute of Estonia. The Applied Research Center (ARC) was created to support organisations with research-intensive product development in five categories: Drone Technologies, Health Data, Biorefining, Hydrogen Technologies, and Autonomous Vehicles.
The drone technologies will be divided into two branches: research and development and laboratories. Research and development will encompass data solutions (sensors, AI, ML, different platforms, data centres), secure communications, navigation, counter UAV solutions, platform developments, and industrialisation. Laboratory services will include simulations, environmental tests, control systems, navigation tests, EMC measurements, and market evaluations. Job purpose

Plan, develop, and conduct research, development, and creative activities in drone technologies, as well as participate in international cooperation.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise research and development activities in the drone technology sector to ensure their effectiveness
  • Apply theoretical knowledge to support internal development projects and provide research and development services to external companies
  • Supervise the members of the drone technology unit in their research and development activities
  • Get involved in global projects within the drone technology industry and help enable participation
  • Contribute to formulating the strategy for the drone technology sector
  • Able to use knowledge in the drone technology sector to promote education and learning
  • Represent the ARC in industry associations

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in natural sciences or engineering, with at least one level of study in aviation
  • Previous experience as a lead or senior researcher at a research institution is beneficial
  • International experience, such as a PhD overseas or managing international cooperation projects
  • Proficiency in team or project management, with a preference for experience in grant project management
  • Knowledge of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems
  • Minimum of five years of experience in drone technology research and development, covering development, subsystems, and applications
  • Skilled at planning and researching drone technology
  • Experience in managing and executing drone projects
  • Deep understanding of drone construction, control, subsystems, and integration
  • Proficiency in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data regarding unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Understanding how to plan drone flights, assess risks, and ensure safety
  • Skilled in the analysis and presentation of research findings
  • Ability to create scientific articles and reports
  • Independence, innovation, a solution-oriented mindset, and strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrating proficiency in research ethics and data protection is essential
  • Proficiency in English at a C1 level is required, and familiarity with the Estonian language is desirable
  • Additional advantageous qualifications include international experience and a network in the drone field, knowledge of drone regulations and standards, piloting skills, and drone operating licenses
