On Wednesday 19 February, the Estonian National Metrology Institute and Applied Research Center Metrosert opened its doors to young people for the “Take Your Child to Work” initiative. 17 pupils from primary and secondary schools had the opportunity to get to know Metrosert’s laboratories and work.
The young people were mentored by Metrosert’s Aigar Vaigu, Lauri Lillepea, Mari Aru, Rainer Kivimäe and Anti Rõžikov. The students got an insight into the field of precision metrology and Metrosert’s role in the Estonian economy. The 150th anniversary of the Metric Convention was discussed. They learned about the 150th anniversary of the metric system and the SI units of measurement. They were fascinated by the laboratories of the State Metrology Laboratories and by the fact that the most accurate kilogram in Estonia, where not even dust is allowed to fall, is located in Metrosert. They visited the soon-to-be-opened biorefining laboratory at the Applied Research Center, and talked about the importance of applied research in Estonia and the world.
“Take Your Child to Work!” initiative is taking place for the eighth time this year, offering students from all over Estonia the opportunity to get to know their parents’ workplaces and working environment. Last year, nearly 1,100 employers, 250 schools and 4,000 students took part in the initiative.
