The Weight of Hugo Treffner Gymnasium’s Director’s Insignia was Increased

On Saturday, December 9, a ceremonial event was held at the Vanemuine Concert Hall in Tartu to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Hugo Treffner Gymnasium.

At the end of the ceremony, the school’s alumni association presented the school with a newly made director’s insignia. Designed by Maarja Roosi and crafted by jewelry artist Tag Vool, the insignia features an owl. Everything seemed in order, but something was still missing.

On a pre-Christmas Tuesday afternoon, Hugo Treffner Gymnasium’s director Ott Ojaveer arrived at Metrosert with the insignia to determine its mass and equip it with a precious metal control mark. This was done to “add weight” to the insignia and ensure that the documents describing the insignia had accurate data. Although the insignia’s maker had stated its mass as 540g, measurements showed it to be somewhat lighter. The material was indeed silver, and the insignia was marked with the standard grade of 830.

The mass determination was carried out by measurement technician Margus Noška, and the hallmarking was performed by Jelena Muhhamedjanova, the head of the Estonian Assay Office.
