This year, Metrosert’s metrologist Rimma Tursk celebrates her 40th work anniversary at Estonia’s national metrology center. As one of Metrosert’s longest-serving employees, Rimma has witnessed the organization’s development over the course of four decades. Her career began with the calibration of calibration weights and has evolved into a multifaceted role involving a wide range of measuring instruments. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, we asked Rimma what draws her to metrology and how the nature of her work has changed over the years.
How did you come to work at Metrosert?
In 1985, Metrosert was looking for a new employee in the field of mass and volume measurements. At the time, my sister worked at Metrosert and told me about the job opportunity. I got in touch, and that’s how I joined the team. I started by calibrating large quantities of calibration weights, because, as is often the case, newcomers are first assigned the simpler, more routine tasks. That’s how I began learning and growing. In addition to mass and volume measuring instruments, I’ve also calibrated, verified, and inspected taximeters, mechanical tachographs, stopwatches, and various instruments used for geometric measurements. This shows just how diverse my work has become over the years.

What do you do in your day-to-day work?
My daily tasks involve calibrating, verifying, and inspecting various measuring instruments. I still work with mass and volume instruments, but over time, I’ve learned to calibrate many other types of equipment as well.
What has kept you at Metrosert for all these 40 years?
There’s no secret formula to a long career—I’ve simply become accustomed to this kind of work. Metrosert has provided me with stability and opportunities to continually develop in the field of instrument calibration.
Tell us a little about yourself—what do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy staying active and traveling whenever I can. Physical activity keeps me in shape, and traveling broadens my horizons—something that also proves useful in my work.
