Celebrating World Metrology Day on May 20th, Now Recognized by UNESCO

On May 20th, we celebrate World Metrology Day, which this year focuses on the role of precise measurements in shaping a more sustainable future.

Understanding the impact of our decisions and actions on the environment requires the ability to measure this impact accurately. When adopting new, more environmentally friendly technology, it must be tested, and advancing measurement science is essential for this purpose. To make our processes and production more efficient, we must ensure our measuring instruments are verified and that we use the correct equipment and methodologies for measurements. Metrology plays a central role in understanding and evaluating the actions that lead us towards a more sustainable tomorrow.

World Metrology Day is celebrated on May 20th because, on this date in 1875, the Meter Convention was signed, which is the foundation of the modern international system of units.

Starting in 2024, UNESCO will also officially recognize World Metrology Day for the first time.
