On Thursday, June 12th, Metrosert visited two very different companies in the Kunda area—both of which rely equally on precise measurement results: the environmentally friendly paper mill Estonian Cell AS and the agriculture sector company ÕITSENG OÜ.
At both companies, we verified truck scales—measuring instruments that play a critical role in accurately determining the mass and value of goods. Verification means checking the measuring instrument’s compliance with established requirements, and it must be performed regularly whenever the instrument is used for measurements that are legally required to undergo mandatory verification.
Estonian Cell AS produces high-quality chemical-free birch pulp, where every raw material load and finished product must be precisely weighed. Reliable measurement is a cornerstone for their production efficiency and environmental sustainability.
At ÕITSENG OÜ, a farming enterprise, the truck scale plays a key role in assessing yield, planning feed, and reporting—every kilogram counts.
To carry out the verification, Metrosert’s Jõhvi laboratory manager Roman Fjodorov, together with cooperation partner Livo Trans, transported 11 calibration weights with a total mass of 22 tons to the site. During verification, standard masses are placed on the scale in a specific sequence and under controlled conditions.
The truck scales have a maximum capacity of 60 tons. A careful reader might wonder: how do we verify the upper range of the scale if we only have 22 tons of weights? After measurements with the calibration weights are done, the verified scale is used to weigh the delivery truck carrying the weights—and if necessary, another vehicle, such as a wheel loader, called a substitute load. By placing both the calibration weights and the substitute load on the scale, it is possible to check the entire load range.
Experience shows that scales tend to be inaccurate mainly in the upper range of the measurement scale. Therefore, when ordering verification or calibration services, it’s worth confirming whether the service provider is actually able to fully load the scale—and whether this is actually done.
This time, both scales met the accuracy class requirements and received a positive verification decision—the reliability of the measurements was confirmed and legal requirements fulfilled. To confirm this, the devices were sealed, and Metrosert applied new verification stickers.
