On May 1st, an exciting and meaningful event took place around Tallinn City Hall – led by Tallinn University of Applied Sciences, teams competed to collect as much trash as possible within one hour.
The competition was part of Spogomi, an international environmental initiative that originated in Japan. In this unique format, three-member teams collect litter in a designated area within a set time, earning points based on the type and amount of waste gathered. The winning team earns the chance to represent Estonia at the World Championship in Tokyo this October. Spogomi combines environmental action with friendly competition, highlighting the power of teamwork while drawing attention to a global issue: pollution in our cities and seas.
Metrosert, known for its precision and quality, was invited to serve as the official judge. Our Head of the Metrology Division Laboratory, Koit Uustalu, was responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the waste weighing process.
Metrosert also joined the competition with its own team. The event kicked off with energy as the teams took off and judges joined each one. Waste had to be sorted by type, and different materials earned different amounts of points. To keep the scoring fair, accurate weighing was essential — and that’s where Metrosert stepped in. We believe that even small actions contribute to a greater goal: a cleaner, more conscious world. The one-hour cleanup delivered powerful results — for example, the participants collected 7.2 kg of cigarette butts, 25.5 kg of mixed packaging, and 136.4 kg of household waste.
A big thank you to Tallinn University of Applied Sciences for this wonderful initiative, and to all participants who are making the world a better place through action. It was an honor to be part of it!
