Estonian Hydrogen Days bring Europe’s leading hydrogen experts to Estonia

On October 9–10, Tartu University will host Estonian Hydrogen Days 2025, where leading scientists, companies, and policymakers will discuss the role of hydrogen in strengthening energy security and national defense in Estonia and the entire region.

The main speakers at the Hydrogen Days are experienced green technology investor and International Energy Agency expert Carmen Font, ABB technology visionary Simo Säynenvirta, and Professor Sadegh Seddighi, Head of the Balanced Energy Systems Research Center at HAN University in the Netherlands.

According to Priit Ilomets, head of the hydrogen technology unit at the Metrosert Applied Research Center, which is co-organizing the Hydrogen Days, the links between hydrogen and energy security have become particularly important due to the instability of the energy markets in our region. Therefore, the conference discussions will cover topics ranging from strategic hydrogen investments and fuel cells in the defense industry to the development of hydrogen supply chains and port infrastructure. “Energy security in the 21st century is no longer about access to fuel, but about the ability to own and develop critical technologies. Estonia’s opportunity is not in the mass production of hydrogen, but in the fact that we are creating world-class solutions here – companies developing electrolysers and fuel cells whose technology is valued all over the world,” he said.

In addition to international speakers, Estonian researchers and companies such as Elcogen, PowerUP, Stargate Hydrogen, and Elering will also share their experiences. Their practical work in the hydrogen sector shows how the role of hydrogen extends from the stability of electricity grids to the security of national defense supplies.

The Hydrogen Days are organized by the University of Tartu, the Metrosert Applied Research Center (RUK), TalTech, and EIS.

The hydrogen technologies division of the Metrosert Applied Research Center is helping to shape a comprehensive and internationally competitive hydrogen technology ecosystem in Estonia. Metrosert is developing a semi-industrial testing center for electrolysers and fuel cells with a total capacity of up to 0.5 MW, offering companies fast and flexible support throughout the development process. Metrosert connects science and industry, supporting the innovation, export capacity, and energy security of Estonian deep tech companies and fostering the next generation of talent in the field in collaboration with universities.
