On Tuesday, November 11, the first laboratory of the Metrosert Applied Research Center officially opened its doors – the first mobile autonomous vehicle testing laboratory in Estonia and Europe.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Economic Affairs and Industry Erkki Keldo, representatives of the Transport Administration, and partners from universities and technology companies.
In numerous speeches, all parties emphasized the role of the laboratory in ensuring future traffic safety and increasing the development and export capabilities of Estonian companies, as well as the importance of close cooperation today and in the future.
Taaniel Tigas, Head of Autonomous Vehicles, introduced the laboratory’s equipment and operating principles. Participants were able to watch a demonstration drive, which showed how the laboratory equipment creates realistic traffic situations for testing the driving characteristics of autonomous vehicles.
The first to appear before the audience was a pedestrian mannequin on a robotic carrier, which settled comfortably between Taaniel Tigas and Minister Erkki Keldo and participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony organized to mark the opening of the laboratory.
