This year, Estonia joins the world in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention. Signed on 20 May 1875 in Paris by representatives of 17 countries, the Metre Convention laid the foundation for global cooperation in the field of measurement and marks an important milestone in the history of metrology.
At the heart of the jubilee year are the ceremonial events taking place on 20–22 May 2025 in Paris and Versailles, where participants will look back on a century and a half of achievements and discuss future visions for metrology. World Metrology Day on 20 May will be celebrated under the theme “Measurements for all time, for all people”, emphasising the enduring and universal importance of accurate measurements.
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) is organising a young metrologists’ initiative, “Vision 2050+”, the results of which will be presented at the anniversary event. In addition, the 22nd International Metrology Congress will take place on 11–14 March 2025 in Lyon, focusing on metrology in the context of sustainability and digitalisation.
Metrology as a scientific discipline can rightfully be considered one of the first to be recognised on a unified basis across the world. The Metre Convention is signed on behalf of a country and can only be signed by one institution – the National Metrology Institute. In Estonia, this role is fulfilled by AS Metrosert, which maintains and develops Estonia’s national measurement standards and has operated under various names since 1919.
