Biorefining Within Reach – Metrosert Is Developing a Dedicated Laboratory

Estonia’s forests hold much more than just timber or wood panels – they contain enormous potential to become the foundation for our next economic leap. Biorefining, which makes it possible to produce bioplastics, biofuels, and even pharmaceutical products from wood, is becoming one of the most important pathways for valorising renewable resources.

Metrosert’s Applied Research Centre has taken a significant step in this direction – a new biorefining laboratory is currently being developed to help companies test and scale innovative solutions in collaboration with scientists and laboratories. Our goal is to bridge science and industry to support Estonian companies in creating products with high added value.

As Kaspar Peek, Head of Industry at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, emphasized in an opinion article published on ERR on May 8, such valorisation – for example, wood-based ibuprofen or lignin-derived biochemicals – can be significantly more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than fossil-based alternatives.

Metrosert is helping to turn this potential into reality by providing access to both technology and expertise. Biorefining is not just an environmentally friendly alternative – it is Estonia’s opportunity to elevate its wood industry to the global stage.
